Orthodox and Catholics to Prepare a Common Position on Dialogue with EU

Orthodox and Catholics to Prepare a Common Position on Dialogue with EUBRUSSELS. According to a report of the Interfax information agency of November 27, 2009, Orthodox and Catholics intend to work together to form a dialogue with the European Union.

The heads of the Orthodox Church's representations at the EU and Father Piotr Mazurkiewicz, the General Secretary for the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community, took park in the first working meeting which was held last Tuesday.

«The parties noted the importance of the historic moment when the Lisbon contract came into force, containing 17 articles about the regular dialogue of EU institutes with churches and religious communities. They have made a decision to start the preparation of a joint position for granting to the EU management,» Archpriest Antony Ilyin, one of meeting participants, acting representative of the Moscow Patriarchate at the European Union, told Interfax-Religion.

«During the discussion participants of the meeting underlined the importance of a uniform approach for the Christian Churches in the EU for the forming of an institutional dialogue with the EU. They have especially noted the importance of a joint mission of Orthodox and Catholic Churches since they have similar positions in the majority of pressing questions,» he said.

As a result of the meeting the participants have made a decision to hold such consultations regularly starting in December of this year.
